The May12 initiative is about Celebration for Women in Mathematics. The initiative was proposed by the Women's Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society at the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)² last July in Rio. The date May 12 was chosen because it is the birthdate of Maryam Mirzakhani. The coordination group of the May 12th initiative includes representatives from the European Women in Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, the African Women in Mathematics Association, Indian Women and Mathematics, Colectivo de Mujeres Matemáticas de Chile and the Women's Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society. The May12 Initiative celebrating Women in Mathematics has been organized in 2019 in several countries in Africa This celebration took two different ways: a special celebration organized mainly by representatives of the African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) or an extended activity on the framework of mathematical events. 1. Egypt: Cairo University, projection of the film “Journeys of Women in Mathematics” at the department of Mathematics during the last day of their spring semester analysis seminar.
2. Ethiopia: Addis Ababa University, Celebrating May 12 2019, in the College of Natural and Computational Sciences of the Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, inviting school girls and also university students.. 3. Senegal: African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS Senegal) “women promoting science to the younger generation” for students in an high school in Mbour.
4. South Africa: African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS Cape town). Small symposium by women Mathematicians of AIMS in collaboration with The African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) to celebrate and encourage themselves in research.
5. South Africa: Stellenbosch University, Celebratory lunch for Women in Mathematics in Stellenbosch. A lunch to celebrate women working in mathematical sciences at Stellenbosch University.
6. Tunisia: Institute of computer science and Mathematics in Monastir, Organized by TWMA : Tunisian Women Mathematician's Association, the day included a projection of the film “Journeys of Women in Mathematics” and presentation of some Tunisian role models in mathematics followed by a discussion with colleagues, Phd-students and students.
7. Democratic Republic of the Congo: Université de Kinshasa, Organisation of scientific activities to celebrate the birthdate of Maryam Mirzakhani by AWMA. The celebration include a conference on the theme «the role of woman mathematician in the society.
8. Benin : Institut de Mathématiques et de Sciences Physiques (IMSP) Panel Discussion, « How to reduce the gender gap in mathematical sciences. » This celebration was part of the the international school called Geonet2019 on "New Trends in Mathematical Methods for Physics". The panelists were women participants coming from different countries of Africa
